    About Undercurrent:

Undercurrent is a Seattle-based dance company dedicated to creating and experimenting with floorwork technique, experiential design, music videos, immersive pop-up performances, and care-centered community building.

Founded in 2017 by Hilary Grumman, Liv Fauver, + Ashley Jade and directed by Hilary since late 2019, Undercurrent offers varied floorwork classes, from an all-ages community practice to high-frequency technique for professional dancers. Drawing on floorwork training in Piso Móvil, Flying Low, Psico-Físico, RUBBERBAND, Jorge Crecis, Ihsan Rustem, Moving Air, Duela-Cemento, A Surprised Body, CONTINUUM, Austrian Parkour, and 11 years of personal floorwork research, Hilary continues to fine-tune a thoughtful and thorough technique that can be taught from the ground up. Through this, movers learn the tactile mechanics and nurture muscle memory to care for their joints while experiencing the rush of floorwork flow, complex inversions, and tricks.

Undercurrent has led intensives for universities, such as the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts, as well as hosted workshops with Fremont Abbey, Velocity Dance Center, WHYTEBERG, Lavinia Vago, Spectrum Dance Theater, Harald Stojan, Nicole von Arx, Elia Mrak, the YC2, and Daniel Costa Dance. Commissions include choreography and performance for Sessions in Place, The Round, Kaylee Elizabeth, Starbucks, and more.

Cost: All classes are donation-based (most folks give $15-40) via cash or Venmo @danceundercurrent.

    About Dance Church:

    HOW IT STARTED

Beginning as a small Sunday morning movement practice, Dance Church was created by Kate Wallich in 2010.

Over the course of a decade, a joyful community of dancers and non-dancers alike have turned Dance Church into a massive gathering of people around the world, dancing and sweating together.

In-person classes were hosted regularly in New York, Seattle, Portland, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles and have popped up in cities worldwide.

    • Emphasize collaboration & creative problem solving
    • Use concept-based lessons, connecting to ideas/concepts students are currently learning or are culturally relevant

    Scholarships

To remain a vibrant community arts center, we strive to be accessible for all ages and incomes. We believe (and recent studies have shown) that collaborative arts experiences actually strengthen individuals and communities… not to mention the effect on your brain development at any age!

One of the ways we support development and stay sustainable is by offering “built in” scholarships with every group class at the Abbey.

Many Abbey classes have a minimum size to become active as well as a maximum size to maintain a quality educational experience. Please tell your friends to join!

    TEACH at THE ABBEY

Most of our classes are started by local teachers who want to help in their community for a truly grass-roots Arts Education experience! The key to success is an exciting & fun class that fills a need and can be promoted well to have at least 5 students enrolled (+ any scholarship students).  Feel free to email classes(at)fremontabbey.org with your proposal.
