    HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US

If you are able and would like to support the future of Abbey Arts, local musicians/artists, and our mission of keeping music/community accessible to people of all incomes, there are many options:

We understand that this is a financially challenging time for many and that not everyone is able to provide financial support–and that’s ok! Other ways of supporting include:

    • Sign up to volunteer (even without our events, there are many online creative/admin/remote projects we need help with! and eventually projects onsite at the Abbey/Homestead when that’s safe.)
    • Share your favorite local artist with friends and family
    • Share/like our posts and those of artists

Abbey Arts (Artwerks DBA Fremont Abbey Arts Center) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that was incorporated in 2002, activated in 2005, and launched more activity after the venue renovation was finished in 2008.

We support the creative community in Seattle and King County.  Our events are sometimes licensed by other venues in cities around the US such as Portland, Spokane, Austin, Tacoma, Whidbey Island, Anacortes, and more.

Annual attendance at Abbey Arts events and programs averages approximately 40,000.  We support a wide variety of nonprofits, arts groups, local neighbors, developing musicians, and students of all ages.

Feel free to email us arts(at)fremontabbey.org if you have any questions or would like to make an in-kind donation or company match.  Office phone: 206.414.8325

    Why support the arts?

Our experience (and brain studies) show that experiencing the arts can be the one of the best ways for people of all ages to further develop their brain, advance in school, interact better in society, and improve their overall wellness and quality of life.  This is especially true when multiple art forms & artists collaborate together.  In fact, you can literally expand your mind, build new neural connections, and grow your brain on the arts!

This can be through an educational experience such as a class or workshop or by viewing a stellar performance from just a few feet away.  Young minds need these experiences to develop mentally & socially as well as improving confidence so they can do better in school and life.  Mature minds also need these experiences to stay fresh and diversify their social (and neural!) networks.

We also know that studies show “giving individuals repeated rewarding experiences with the arts over time is a necessary first step before other, more public benefits of the arts can be realized.  These other benefits include: exposure to new perspectives; sharpened learning skills among young people; expanded capacity for empathy; and stronger social bonds in communities.” www.rand.org/news/press.05/02.15.html

“Artwerks DBA Fremont Abbey” is a very lean & limber 501c3 IRS registered nonprofit and we make sure your donation goes towards supporting arts programs & community building.  See below (and our About page) for more about the Abbey’s unique sustainability model & reuse of an old 1914 church building.

    Sustainable Finances

Sustainability is not just about the environment or producing something with “green” technologies.  According to Sustainable Seattle, the classic definition of sustainability is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Sustainability isn’t measured simply in environmental terms (though we do a lot towards that too) but rather encompasses “the inter-connectivity among ecological, social and economic factors … (and) address the inter-generational nature of those factors.” [Thanks Fremont Brewing for the great wording on all this!]

Our community event rentals (which do fulfill a part of our mission as well) cover all building expenses, rent & overhead so 100% of your donation can actually go towards Arts, Culture & Community Building Experiences for all-ages & Income levels.

Our total budget in 2008 was $73,000, 2009 was $127,000, 2010 reached $140,000, 2011 was $176,600 and in 2012 we even grew our budget to $225,000, far exceeding original expectations. Pretty amazing to grow through a recession!

We also leverage this amazing building to encompass our Abbey Partner nonprofit organizations and so total operations are typically nearer to $350-400k annually. Of course, the impact on the numerous other occasional partner orgs and artist groups is even greater!

Church of the Apostles (COTA – a young Episcopal/Lutheran church) owns the building through the ELCA and uses it on Sundays primarily but the Arts Center only pays it’s share of building expenses which is below market rate rents. Thanks COTA for empowering our mission!

See our About page for more on this new sustainable model of sharing an old building.

We are definitely still growing towards sustainability, and you can help us in that goal.

If you’d like to receive a more detailed financial report, feel free to contact us.

NOTE: If curious why we aren’t listed on Charity Navigator, it’s because we are below their $500,000 minimum donation level. You can request that they evaluate us or change that policy though!

Again, if you’d like any more information prior to donating, feel free to contact us by email arts(at)fremontabbey.org or phone (206-414-8325)
